Tustin: Man In Walker Killed By Hit & Run Driver

08.09.2025 | 11:17 PM | TUSTIN – A man with a walker was killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing a street, late Saturday night.

The collision involving a man with a blue walker was reported at the intersection of West Main and A streets around 11:17 PM.

When authorities arrived they found a male pedestrian down in eastbound lanes suffering from major injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

Medics initiated CPR on the downed man using a LUCAS CPR device before rushing him to OC Global Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, according to family who have established a GoFundMe and a heavily delayed response from a police spokeswoman.

The man was identified by police as as 60-year-old Augustin Flores Mendez. A city of residence was not provided.

Preliminary reports suggest the pedestrian was crossing the street with his walker when a eastbound vehicle struck him. One nearby resident recounted hearing a collision followed by the sound of a vehicle speeding away from the scene of the crash.

Police established a crime scene and were seeking video and other evidence that might lead them to the hit-and-run driver but a police spokeswoman refused to confirm the incident was a hit-and-run or actually involved any vehicle.

In a response several days after County News’ media inquiry, a police spokeswoman confirmed only the identity of the decedent and refused to provide a phone number or contact information for members of the public who might have information that would assist in apprehension of the hit and run driver or any suspect or vehicle description.

A nearby resident reports being told by police who returned to the scene to investigate that the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian had not yet been located.
