12.27.2021 | 12:20 PM | SUNSET BEACH – A suspect who shot a bicyclist was critically injured in a subsequent officer-involved shooting, Monday afternoon.
Huntington Beach police responded to reports of a bicyclist that had been shot by a suspect near the intersection of South Pacific Avenue and 7th Street around 12:20 PM.
When officers arrived on scene they located a suspect armed with a gun who refused to comply with verbal commands resulting in an officer-involved shooting that critically wounded the armed man near the intersection of South Pacific Avenue and 3rd Street.
Both the male bicyclist and the male suspect were treated on scene before being rushed to area hospitals.
The suspect was in critical condition while the bicycle rider sustained non-life threatening injuries.
No officers were injured and a firearm belonging to the suspect was recovered at the scene.
It remains unclear what prompted the initial shooting incident but police said there was no indication that suspect had a preexisting relationship with the victim.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting which is standard procedure in such events.
