Santa Ana: Wheelchair-Bound Man Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Hit & Run Driver

06.28.2019 | 10:42 PM | SANTA ANA – A wheelchair-bound man was in critical condition after being struck by a hit and run driver while crossing in a marked crosswalk, Friday night.

Authorities responded to reports of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of West 1st and North Townsend streets around 10:42 PM.

Units arriving on scene located a man in a wheelchair down in the roadway suffering from serious trauma and initiated life-saving measures including CPR.

Firefighter paramedics transported the man to an area hospital where he remained hospitalized in critical condition.

The driver who struck the man fled the scene without stopping to render aid.

Days later authorities responded to a citizen report of a vehicle with damage consistent with being involved in a collision.

Officers responded and confirmed the vehicle observed by the citizen was the same as the one that struck the wheelchair-bound man.

Shortly after locating the vehicle authorities arrested 48-year-old Lucio Luna, of Santa Ana, on suspicion of felony hit and run.

The investigation is ongoing but initial reports indicate the victim was crossing in a marked crosswalk when he was struck.
