Santa Ana: Suspected DUI Driver Travels Wrong-Way For Miles

10.10.2020 | 3:11 AM | SANTA ANA – A suspected DUI driver who traveled wrong-way for miles was apprehended and found to be nearly twice the legal limit, early Saturday morning.

Calls reporting a black Jeep SUV traveling northbound in southbound lanes of the SR-55 Freeway near Dyer Road poured in around 3:11 AM.

One of the callers, a Costa Mesa police officer, reported she was trailing the wrong-way driver from northbound lanes but later lost visual when the suspect continued wrong-way onto the I-5 Freeway.

The male driver continued going northbound in southbound lanes of the I-5 Freeway before exiting at Grand Avenue and ultimately being apprehended at a stop light.

Officers administered field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer on the driver which revealed he was over twice the legal limit.

The officer who trailed the suspect from the other side of the freeway responded to the final stop location and confirmed that the individual detained was the same person she observed driving wrong-way.
