06.14.2026 | 10:30 PM | SANTA ANA – A 16-year-old armed with a knife was shot to death by police following reports of a family dispute, Sunday night.
The incident began to unfold around 10:30 PM at an apartment in the 3400 block of South Main Street when a 53-year-old man called to report that his girlfriend’s son was under the influence, armed with a knife, and vandalising their home.
When officers arrived on scene they heard an ongoing disturbance and entered the apartment where they found the 53-year-old male suffering from a stab wound believed to have been inflicted by the 16-year-old juvenile.
The juvenile was still armed with a knife and had access to other weapons inside the apartment, police said.
Despite multiple commands to drop the knife, the juvenile refused to comply or surrender to officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
The juvenile, who has yet to be identified, was struck by gunfire and pronounced deceased on scene.
The 53-year-old male who had called initially called police was treated on scene and transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening stab wounds.
The juvenile’s mother was also evaluated by medics at the scene but declined transport to a hospital.
No officers or other civilians were injured in the incident.
A large crime scene was established while authorities responded to investigate the officer-involved shooting and detectives were seeking witnesses and video surveillance that might have captured some of the incident.
All southbound lanes of Main Street were closed at Columbine Avenue until further notice while the officer-involved shooting investigation progressed.
