Santa Ana: Officer Crashes Into BMW i8 While Responding To Pursuit

11.10.2019 | 1:59 AM | SANTA ANA – An officer and the driver of a BMW i8 were injured after a major crash that caused a light pole to fall onto a building, early Sunday morning.

Officers were in pursuit of a white Honda occupied by a male driver and female passenger in the Eastside area of Santa Ana shortly around 1:45 AM.

An officer from the Santa Ana Police Department was responding to assist with the pursuit when he was involved in a traffic collision with a BMW i8 near the intersection of South Main and East Camile streets around 1:59 AM.

The impact of the crash substantially damaged the more than $163,000 BMW and caused a light pole to collapse onto a building. Fortunately the building, which appears to house multiple apartments, was not seriously damaged.

Firefighter paramedics treated both the driver of the BMW and police officer on scene before transporting them to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle initially being pursuit by officers eventually crashed into a parked vehicle at the end of a cul-de-sac in the 1100 block of Cypress Avenue.

Officers apprehended the male driver and released the female passenger on scene.

It was unclear if the officer who crashed was traveling with his emergency lights and siren activated at the time of the crash.

All lanes of Main Street are closed between East Myrtle and East Bishop streets until further notice while officials investigate.
