Santa Ana: Man Fatally Stabbed Near Bike Trail

08.09.2021 | 7:49 PM | SANTA ANA – A man was stabbed to death near a bike trail and another man was arrested on connection with the homicide, Monday night.

Authorities responded to reports of a stabbing victim in the 500 block of Dyer Road, near South Bradford Place,  around 7:49 PM.

Units arriving on scene located a male victim suffering from multiple stab wounds near a bike trail.

Despite attempts at medical intervention the male victim was pronounced deceased on scene. He was later identified as 36-year-old Joany Hernandez, of Santa Ana.

Bystanders alerted officers to a suspicious man walking away from the scene of the stabbing.

After a brief foot pursuit the man, later identified as 42-year-old Sergio Gaytan, of Santa Ana, was detained and found to be in possession of a items belonging to the victim.

Blood on Gaytan’s shirt along with incriminating statements he made to detectives later resulted in his arrest.

A knife believed to be the murder weapon was discovered nearby.

Both directions of Dyer Road between South Garnsey Street and South Sycamore Street were closed while homicide detectives investigate the fatal stabbing.
