The male adult, who has yet to be identified, died early Thursday morning at the OC Global Medical Center after being arrested following a police pursuit that ended with less lethal munitions and a police dog being deployed.

Police say the man was in custody following the Tuesday, September 12, 2022 pursuit that began when officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run crash in the 1800 block of North Broadway around 1:45 PM.

The man reportedly fled the scene in a white van prompting a pursuit that lasted about 15 minutes before ending in a parking lot located in the 100 block of North Main Street.

Police said the man refused to comply with commands and that less lethal munitions along with a police dog were deployed to subdue him. He was treated on scene by medics before being transported to OC Global Medical Center where he ultimately died Thursday.

A witness said they saw the man armed with a handgun during the pursuit although there was no word on if a firearm was recovered.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office and Santa Ana Department’s Homicide Section and Internal Affairs Group are investigating the death.

A separate investigation by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner Department is set to determine the cause and manner of death.
