San Juan Capistrano: Crash Involving Diesel Tanker Leaves Driver Trapped, Spurs Leak

09.17.2021 | 11:29 PM | SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – A crash involving a diesel tanker left one person trapped and spurred a large leak, late Friday night.

The crash was reported on the southbound I-5 Freeway just south of Ortega Highway shortly before 11:30 PM.

Units arriving on scene located a big rig hauling diesel that had collided with a black Toyota Camry, according to a California Highway Patrol incident log.

The driver of the big rig was trapped in the cab of his vehicle and had to be freed by firefighters as diesel gushed from the tanker.

Firefighter paramedics transported the big rig driver to an area hospital in unknown condition. The driver of the Toyota was not believed to be injured.

All southbound lanes of the I-5 Freeway were closed at Ortega Highway as crews worked to contain the diesel leak.

At least 1,000 gallons of diesel was believed to have spilled as a result of the crash.
