Newport Beach: Second Alarm Fire Damages Tennis Club

11.30.2020 | 9:52 PM | NEWPORT BEACH – A second-alarm fire left the Newport Beach Tennis Club damaged, Monday night.

The fire was first reported at the Newport Beach Tennis Club located in the 2600 block of Eastbluff Drive by an alarm company and passerby shortly after 9:50 PM.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found thick black smoke showing from the club and began efforts to locate and extinguish the fire.

In about 15 minutes firefighters discovered a fire in the basement of the club being held in check by a sprinkler system and quickly doused it.

A hazmat response was initiated due to what was believed to be pool chemicals in the basement but the response was cancelled when the chemicals were later determined to be laundry detergent.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
