07.19.2022 | 1:00 PM | NEWPORT BEACH – A police officer and suspect were injured following an officer-involved shooting, police announced Tuesday.

The shooting occurred at the Baywood Apartment Homes, located at 1 Baywood Drive, when officers confronted a domestic violence suspect shortly after 6:30 PM Monday.

Officers initially responded to reports of a domestic violence incident in the 1600 block of San Miguel Drive but later learned the suspect, a 43-year-old Newport Bach woman, had fled across the street to an apartment complex.

The suspect, who was armed with an unspecified weapon, was confronted by an officer leading to an officer-involved shooting, police said.

Gunfire injured the suspect and medics later transported her to an area hospital where she is expected to survive.

The officer that shot the suspect, identified only as a nine-year veteran of the force, sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident but no additional details were released.

Per policy, the involved officer was placed on paid administrative leave while the Orange County District Attorney’s works alongside the Newport Beach Police Department to investigate the shooting.
