Newport Beach: Freeway Crash Leaves One Dead Near UCI

08.12.2023 | 1:00 AM | NEWPORT BEACH – A person was dead after being struck by a vehicle on the SR-73 Freeway near UCI, early Saturday morning.

The incident was reported on the southbound SR-73 Freeway near MacArthur Boulevard around 1:00 AM when callers reported a person down in lanes near the University of California, Irvine (UCI) campus.

When authorities arrived they located a black Ford Fusion with front-end damage and a person deceased in lanes.

A female that may have been related to the deceased individual was also located at the scene of the crash and transported to a nearby home on the UCI campus.

The driver of the Ford and her passenger remained on scene and were cooperating with authorities.

The identity of the deceased was not immediately disclosed.

All southbound traffic was halted while authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the fatality.
