Police in Laguna Beach were alerted to the presence of a vehicle wanted in connection with a homicide and carjacking that occurred in Carlsbad by automated license plate readers around 12:45 AM.
Officers located the vehicle, a maroon 2011 Kia Sorento, and followed it as it entered the northbound SR-73 Freeway from Newport Coast Drive. When authorities attempted to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle the suspect fled, traveling northbound on the SR-73 Freeway.
The pursuit reached speeds of 85 MPH and continued to the northbound SR-55 before heading southbound on the I-405, and then southbound on the I-5 freeway when it reportedly struck a spike strip.
The vehicle then exited at El Toro Road and continued onto Avenida De La Carlota where the suspect abruptly turned the vehicle perpendicular to pursuing officers, exited the car, and opened fire on law enforcement with a semiautomatic handgun.
After firing several shots the suspect attempted to run towards a nearby In-N-Out restaurant before being struck by a hail of law enforcement gunfire and collapsing.
No officers were struck and the suspect was treated on scene before being rushed to a nearby trauma center in unknown condition.
Authorities in Carlsbad reported that the suspect was wanted in connection with an incident that occurred at an apartment complex located in the 2300 block of Rising Glen Way around 9:53 PM, Friday. Officers responded to that location following reports of gunfire when they found a woman who had been shot in the parking. She died at the scene.
Traffic in the area was being diverted away from the scene while law enforcement investigated the officer involved shooting.
