09.13.2022 | 4:00 PM | IRVINE – A teenage electric scooter rider died days after being struck by a suspected DUI driver, police announced Tuesday.
The rider, identified as 19-year-old Boyue Huang, of Irvine, died at a local hospital on September 12, 2022 just six days after being struck by a suspected DUI driver near the intersection of Barranca Parkway and Red Hill Avenue.
The crash was reported around 9:07 PM on September 6 when Huang’s scooter, a MiniMotors Speedway Nano Pro, was struck by a black Hyundai sedan.
The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 37-year-old Rhett Joseph Zerboni, of Anaheim, was arrested on suspicion of DUI after performing field sobriety tests. Jail records show Zerboni is being held without bail in the Orange County Jail.
Although the cause of the crash is still under investigation, police say they suspect Zerboni’s intoxication played a role.
