Irvine: Student Bicyclist Seriously Injured After Crash

01.11.2019 | 9:09 AM | IRVINE – A University of California, Irvine (UCI) student was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle, Friday morning.

Police and fire officials responded to the vehicle versus bicycle traffic collision at the intersection of Campus Drive and Stanford Court around 9:09 AM.

Units arriving on scene located an approximately 20-year-old male bicyclist laying in the intersection several feet away from a bicycle.

The man, later identified as a UCI student through the school’s registrar, was treated on scene by firefighter paramedics before being transported to OC Global Medical Center with serious injuries.

Initial reports indicate the student was riding on his bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle leaving the UCI Social Sciences Parking Structure.

The vehicle that struck the bicyclist, a white Toyota sedan with rideshare livery, remained on scene and the driver appeared to be cooperating with law enforcement.

All lanes of Campus Drive were closed between Bridge Road and Berkeley Avenue for nearly six hours while officers investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash.
