Los Angeles police officers were in pursuit of a black GMC pickup truck driven by a shooting suspect shortly before 10:45 PM, according to radio traffic.
Officers called off the pursuit and began trailing the subject, who they believed to be still armed, on the southbound I-405 Freeway into Orange County.
A California Highway Patrol officer, apparently not knowing the vehicle was being trailed, attempted to stop it for speeding.
The driver failed to yield prompting a second pursuit that reached speeds of over 90 MPH before crashing into an attenuator on the HOV transition from the southbound I-405 Freeway to the southbound I-5 Freeway shortly before 11:00 PM.
Firefighter paramedics transported the driver to an area hospital for treatment however his condition was not immediately available.
Officers flared off the transition road while they investigated the crash and worked to clear the roadway.
