07.21.2026 | 11:45 AM | IRVINE – A 20-year-old Irvine man died Tuesday after being shot by police officers following a mental health crisis call that led to a standoff of more than an hour, according to a press release from the Irvine Police Department.
The incident began when the man called authorities himself, shortly before noon, to report he was experiencing a mental health crisis and was armed with a knife outside his home on Evening Breeze, the release said. Officers located him nearby at the intersection of Sungate and Silkwood, where he was holding a knife.
The department’s Crisis Negotiation Team responded and spent more than an hour attempting to reach a peaceful resolution, according to the release. The Orange County Fire Authority and the Irvine Community Alternative Response and Engagement Team — a program that pairs law enforcement response with mental health and medical resources — were also on scene throughout the negotiation, the department said.
The man moved toward officers with the knife, at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred, according to police. Officers rendered aid at the scene before he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the release said.
His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family, police said. The Irvine Police Department is conducting a joint investigation with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, which reviews all officer-involved shootings in the county, according to the release.
