Irvine: Four Rescued, Armed Suspect Arrested Following Standoff

02.11.2026 | 2:46 PM | IRVINE – Four hostages were rescued and a suspect armed with a machete was later arrested following an hours long standoff in an upscale neighborhood, Wednesday evening.

The incident began to unfold at a around 2:15 PM when a family arrived at the Irvine Police Department to report a family dispute occurring at a home in the 100 block of Terrapin.

When officers arrived they learned that an a man armed with a machete was holed up inside the home. Four other people, believed to be family members, were hiding inside a bedroom and unable to leave due to the armed man.

A lengthy standoff ensued but the four hostages were rescued from a third-floor window using a ladder by about 4:00 PM.

Attempts to negotiate a peaceful resolution with the suspect were unsuccessful and SWAT officers later used tear gas and concussion devices to effect an arrest around 7:30 PM.

Details regarding the initial family dispute that lead to the standoff were not immediately disclosed.
