Irvine: Apparent Pipe Bomb Discovered By Firefighters

01.06.2022 | 11:31 PM | IRVINE – Firefighters responding to reports of a structure fire discovered an apparent pipe bomb, late Thursday night.

Callers reported a loud explosion with smoke prompting a structure fire response near the intersection of Roosevelt and Taft Street around 11:31 PM.

When units arrived on scene they were alerted to an object in the center divider of the roadway that resembled am expended pipe bomb with black powder residue nearby.

Crews cordoned off the area, closing both directions of Roosevelt between Taft Street and Huntington, while police responded to the scene.

Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion followed by smoke coming from the apparent pipe bomb.

There did not appear to be any outstanding threat to the public although a police spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
