Costa Mesa: Suspicious Fire Causes Injuries, Prompts Investigation

01.01.2021 | 9:00 AM | COSTA MESA – A suspicious fire broke out near a marquee sign causing a multi casualty incident to be declared and prompting an arson investigation, Friday morning.

The fire broke out near a strip mall in the 2300 block of Newport Boulevard, near Wilston Street, shortly before 9:00 AM.

According to a witness, a male transient had a warming fire near the marquee sign which she later saw was engulfed in flames.

The male transient was reportedly injured and transported from the scene.

Video from the scene shows an animal control officer removing a deceased animal from the scene of the fire along with burned debris near the marquee sign.

A bicycle believed to be associated with the transient also appeared to have been impounded by police.

Details regarding the incident were limited but a city blotter shows that the fire department declared the incident a “multi casualty incident” while police had the call listed as an “arson investigation.”

Further information regarding the incident was not immediately available.
