Costa Mesa: Fiery DUI Crash Closes Freeway Connector Ramp

03.25.2019 | 1:43 AM | COSTA MESA – A woman was under arrest after losing control of her SUV and causing it to roll before becoming engulfed in flames, Monday morning.

Authorities responded to reports of a traffic collision with a vehicle overturned and on fire at the beginning of the southbound SR-55 connector to the southbound SR-73 around 1:43 AM.

Units arriving on scene found a white hybrid Lexus SUV fully involved with fire in the gore point of the connector road.

The vehicle’s driver and solo occupant, a 31-year-old female, was able to free herself from the wreckage without injury.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the vehicle fire but had to return to the scene later as a result of the hybrid battery reigniting.

Officers investigating the crash administered field sobriety tests to the driver before placing her under arrest on suspicion of DUI along with a possible warrant for reckless driving.

The freeway connector road was closed for nearly two hours while crews worked to clear the scene.
