01.06.2021 | 7:20 PM | BUENA PARK – An apparently armed suspect who led officers on a high-speed pursuit before barricading himself inside a motel was taken into custody after a standoff, Wednesday night.
The incident began around 7:20 PM when officers attempted to stop a speeding white 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee on the northbound I-5 Freeway in south Orange County 7:20 PM.
When the solo male driver failed to yield, officers initiated a pursuit that quickly reached speeds over 100 MPH.
A spike strip was successfully deployed and deflated at least one tire on the Jeep but driver continued to flee at high speeds.
The chase continued northbound on the I-5 before transitioning to the SR-57 and then westbound on the SR-91 Freeway.
At around 7:50 PM the driver exited at Valley View Street and ditched the still moving Jeep while fleeing on foot into the lobby of a Motel 6.
A slew of law enforcement surrounded the motel and later determined the suspect had barricaded himself in the motel’s front office.
After about an hour inside the office a team of officers made entry and used a taser to detain the suspect who remained defiant.
The suspect had to be subdued using a body wrap and was later transported to an area hospital for evaluation.
An apparent rifle was recovered from the area where the suspect was hiding although it was unclear if it was operable.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
